Le nom se rencontre dans la Seine-Maritime depuis le XVIe siècle (Saint-Martin-aux-Buneaux). C'est une variante de Thomine, Thoumine, des noms de famille portés surtout dans la Manche. Eux-mêmes sont des matronymes formés sur Thomin, diminutif du prénom Thomas. Autres variantes : Thomines (14), et peut-être les énigmatiques Thomyre, Thoumyre, Thoumire, Tommire, Toumire (76).
